What is counselling?
You can find out about what counselling entails by reading About Counselling.

How do I know if I need counselling?
It's your choice to have counselling and only you really know if you need counselling.
The following is a list of things why people come for counselling.

loss
bereavement
relationship difficulties

unresolved hurt from your past
feeling overwhelmed by something

You may want self-development, have personal or professional needs,
something maybe getting you down, you maybe suffering alone or in silence

You could be feeling stuck, being bullied, feeling suicidal

You may have a low self-esteem and would like to grow in confidence.
You may decide you would like to have counselling due to you
or someone close to you that has a life limiting illness.

Other issues that may be affecting you could include
debt, disability, family issues, redundancy, work related problems

separation, divorce, childhood trauma, emotional abuse
or a change in circumstances

You may be have panic attacks or panic disorder,
You may be feeling isolated,
fearful, stressed, or neglected.

How many people in the UK have counselling?
It's not fully known how many do but the amount of people becoming counsellors
over the past 10 years has increased to keep up with demand.

Are counsellors regulated?
Counsellors are not currently regulated but counsellors
do belong to associations to show they are professional.

How can I be assured of a practitioner's professionalism?
You can have some assurance if the counsellor has relevant counselling qualification,
insurance and a member of a professional body such as National Counselling Society

How long does a counselling sessions last?
Counselling is usually 1 hour per week, as most of the processing you do can be between the sessions
and having a week between sessions allows you to think about what you have spoken about.

Do I have to pay for counselling sessions?
Yes you can see the amount for sessions on the Costs page and in most cases you would be paying
for the sessions at the end with cash or cheque.
There is an option to pay for a certain amount of sessions up front if you'd prefer to do this.

What is Online and Telephone Counselling
like and is it the same as being in a room?

I can provide online or telephone counselling, it isn't like being in the room but you
may find it easier to access if you find it hard to get out due to a condition
or other reasons preventing you from coming to me or me coming to you.
If you were to choose telephone counselling we won't be able to see each other
and so most of the work will be through what is being said. If you chose to have online counselling
and are able to use a computer or tablet computer with access to the internet
then this option can be useful. We would be able to see each other and talk through
what you would like to discuss. Some people maybe used to using video calling
and you may find this appropriate, if you haven't used this before it may take time
to get used to this form of counselling. For both forms of counselling I would be in a confidential space
and it would be best practice for you to have a confidential quiet place to be where you are.

What is counselling at home like and what do I need to know?
Counselling in your own home can be beneficial for people that can't access
where I am based for certain reasons. You would need to ensure we have
a confidential appropriate space for us to both sit for an hour
and ensure there are little interruptions to provide you the space to be able to talk.
We can discuss this further if you find this might help.
There can be added costs for this and we can talk about this
if you felt your circumstances required counselling from your home.
